Apr. 22nd, 2015 08:22 pmI don't know if I was just supremely spoiled, growing up in fandom during the age of message boards and private sites dedicated to specific aspects of fandom, or if fandom today has just become supremely entitled.
The sheer number of people who attack each other, or the writers, or the show/movie itself over a ship is astounding to me.
Like.
The canon literally has no effect on how you ship something? You can totally ship things without them being canon! That has never, in the history of people being fans of things, stopped anyone from shipping anything!
A brief list of pairings that have never been canon but live on to this day:
-Spock/Kirk
-Holmes/Watson
-Harry/Draco
-Remus/Sirius
-Frodo/Sam
Immensely popular pairings, right? Never canon. (even though Remus/Sirius is like... barely not canon. By the barest thread they are not canon)
So why on EARTH have people suddenly become vicious about their ships? Ship and let ship! If they aren't bothering you, leave it alone! Let them do their thing!
It's frustrating to go into the Romanogers tag right now because so many people are bitching and moaning about Steve and Natasha not being canon in AoU and I'm like "wait you seriously expected that?" (also I'm like "Hey thanks for tagging your AoU spoilers assholes, it doesn't come out in the States until the 30th") Like, I get that I run the biggest Romanogers shipping blog on Tumblr and I am immensely grateful for the support and the people who have come together because of it but the fact that I have had to make multiple, continuous posts preaching tolerance and peace in the tags is getting a little annoying.
Not to mention the continuing ship wars in OUaT fandom but that's going to go on until after we're all dead and gone, and Emma's still canonically married to Killian and sailing the seven seas with him forevermore, and Regina and Robin have had seventeen children and a blissfully happy marriage.
I get annoyed when people insist their non-canon ship is canon. I do. But I keep my mouth shut about it because it's not worth it. They're happy doing their thing, and I'll just be over here doing mine. We can exist peacefully and be annoyed by each other but that's life. Just don't bug each other about it, for fuck's sake.
